  Preservation of Our Cultural Heritages

Project 3: Proposed Model Historical Awkunanaw Compound

DESCRIPTION: Principally, the walls of the houses were made of mud and the roof made of dry grasses. This combination ensured natural air conditioning. In other words, the interior temperature of the houses was usually fairly stable irrespective of the outside temperature. The fence, on the other hand served dual purposes of security for the household and enclosure for the livestock. The ban housed the farm produce while as many huts as the number of wives the man had were usually erected.

That building pattern has now been overtaken by westernisation and urbanisation, to the extent that one rarely finds the original type of Awkunanaw compound anywhere in the community these days.
Awkunanaw Enlightenment Foundation however thought it wise to have a typical original Awkunanaw Compound erected for the purposes of preservation of the people’s culture and tradition. This when actualised is expected to serve as tourist attraction as the artifacts of Awkunanaw will be on display in the compound.

COST ESTIMATE: The cost of the project has been estimated at NGN 4,200,000.00

Project 4: OMUOHA SQUARE

DESCRIPTION: Omuoha is a square located at Amupata in Obuoffia Awkunanaw. The historical significance of Omuoha square dates back to the days of Osagwede Osawuwa, the legendry founder of Awkunanaw. History had it that Osagwede had four sons, who founded the four core Awkunanaw towns, namely Obuoffia, Akegbe Ugwu, Amodu and Umaa. It was said that the Founder of Obuoffia was the biological eldest son.

Given that historical significance of Omuoha, Awkulite now desires to develop it into a befitting cultural/tourist center. This, when done will go a long way in preserving the legendry stone and squre for posterity.

COST ESTIMATE: The prospective square has been designed as shown on the picture and the cost of construction estimated at NGN 3.8 Million
